Mark's Ramadan Message

(July 09, 2013)

Mark today announced his Ramadan Message for his Muslim constituents ahead of the start of the Islamic holy month expected to begin tomorrow on 10th July 2013.

Mark said: ‘As ever, the month of Ramadan is a time for peaceful reflection, introspection and spiritual evaluation of one’s faith and it is with this spirit that I hope everyone, not just Muslims, use this opportunity to reflect and act upon our shared common values.  Those of giving to charitable causes; helping those less fortunate than ourselves and protecting the most vulnerable in our society.

Ramadan is a time for giving and traditionally most, if not all Zakat contributions are donated to tackling world poverty and disaster relief funds.  I would urge my constituents to also consider allocating some of their Zakat contributions towards needy projects closer to home.  There are UK Zakat charities who are able to distribute Zakat to people suffering from domestic violence, poverty, homelessness and victims of human trafficking.

This past year has been a testing time for British Muslims in light of national events that have stained the reputation of the majority of honest hard-working moderate Muslims.  Far right and extremist groups have used these opportunities to pedal their own ideologies.  It remains more important than ever that our communities pull together to show solidarity and speak up against the messengers of hate and violence from both extremes of the fringes of our society.  I have lent my support to the Hope Not Hate campaign which has already gained 35,000 signatories in their campaign to reject the ignorance of a few and promote peace amongst the fair-minded majority.’

I wish all my constituents a peaceful month ahead. Ramadan Mubarak.
