Opt-in to Organ Donation

(September 06, 2018)

Mark met with representatives from Kidney Care UK at a Parliamentary drop-in session recently to raise awareness about organ donation.

Sir Mark Hendrick MP 2 (3)They discussed the upcoming Organ Donation (Deemed Consent) Bill, a Private Members' Bill, which is at the reporting stage in the House of Commons. The Bill is due to have it's third reading on Friday 26th October 2018 and has Mark's support.

Currently, potential organ donors must actively give their consent for their organs (opt in) be used for transplantation after their death.  This can be done by signing up to the NHS Organ Donation registration scheme and informing family members of your wishes. Currently, around 6,000 people in the UK are waiting on the NHS Transplant List. Last year, over 400 people died waiting for a transplant.

The new Bill would presume consent for every body and they will be regarded as has having no objection to their organs being donated after their death unless they register to opt out of the system.
