Open Letter to the Chancellor about the shortfall in local government funding

(October 30, 2018)

I have lent my suport to Unison's open letter to the Chancellor, Phillip Hammond following his Autumn Budget, about the urgent need to put more money into local government funding.

The letter is signed by 121 cross party MP's and calls on the Chancellor to increase funding for English Councils.  Although the Government has given councils more power to raise council tax, this doesn't go far enough to meet the shortfall as the Local Government Association (LGA) has identified a funding gap of £5.8 billion by 2020.

Councils across the country are being made to make extremely dificult decisions including cutting back on vital services such as children's services, social services and housing support.
