Eldon Primary School wins national prize for 'Best Primary School' in the UK(June 05, 2018)
I'm delighted that Eldon Primary School in my constituency won the highly coveted Times Educational Supplement (TES) 'School of the Year Award'.
I met up with Head Teacher, Azra Butt (pictured) at a specially organised Parliamentary Reception at the House of Commons, held on 5th June ahead of the main award ceremony on 22nd June at which the winners were announced.
The award recognises and celebrates the extraordinary commitment, quality and innovation shown by teachers and support staff across the UK. I am thrilled that we have not just an Outstanding rated school but an award winning one, which will no doubt raise aspirations for children across the City.
I understand that the calibre of entries was extremely high for this category, which is now in it's tenth year. The judges were “very impressed by Eldon Primary because of the combination of high standards with joyful learning, creativity and innovation”.
I also visited the school recently to unveil two mosaic murals. As part of my visit, I was interviewed by pupils for their in-house radio show, who asked me about my career as an MP and the current issues I am working on. The pupils also kindly performed music, dance and poetry recitals. I very much enjoyed my visit and it gave me a chance to see first-hand how deserving the whole school is for 'School of the Year' award.
